The prevention and management of all types of waste is a crucial tool in the pursuit of protecting the environment and human health in the Union. As Member States strive to improve continuously their waste prevention and management plans, it is vital to stringently apply the waste hierarchy set out in Directive 2008/98/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council (waste hierarchy).
