Adequate eyesight is an essential condition in ensuring physical fitness to drive. All applicants for a driving licence should therefore undergo an appropriate assessment to ensure that they have adequate visual acuity including, where necessary, further examination of the field of vision by a competent eyesight professional authorised by national law. Member States should be allowed to go beyond this requirement, by requiring the same procedure when driving licences are renewed. The decimal notation for visual acuity provides an internationally recognised standard for comparability in establishing eyesight.
