Directive 2005/44/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council establishes a framework for the deployment and use of harmonised river information services (RIS) in the Union. The deployment of RIS on inland waterways supports the safety and efficiency of transport by inland waterways, and ultimately the sustainability and attractiveness of the sector, by increasing the efficiency of inland waterway transport operations.
