Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2055, amending Annex XVII to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, addresses losses of synthetic polymer microparticles, i.e. plastic pellets, for use at industrial sites as avoidable releases and introduces a reporting requirement for an estimated quantity of microplastics released to the environment on an annual basis. While lacking a methodology to estimate losses, that requirement is intended to increase information on plastic pellet losses and improve the quality of the information collected to assess the risks deriving from these microplastics in the future.
