Pursuant to Article 16(4) of the Treaty on European Union (TEU), a qualified majority of the members of the Council is defined, inter alia, on the basis of the population of the Member States. For that purpose, pursuant to Article 4(1) of Regulation (EU) No 1260/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council, Member States are currently obliged to provide the Commission (Eurostat) with data on their total population at national level. Member States should continue to provide such information to the Commission (Eurostat) pursuant to this Regulation.
