Criminal intelligence exchange activities carried out in the context of operational task forces can be accompanied by the opening of criminal investigations in one or more Member States which, as a complementary approach, can benefit from setting up a joint investigation team in order to gather evidence. In accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/794, Europol is able to propose to the Member States concerned to set up such a joint investigation team.
