To combat corruption effectively, the efficient exchange of information between competent authorities responsible for the prevention, detection, investigation or prosecution of corruption offences is crucial. Member States should ensure that information is exchanged between competent law enforcement authorities using Europol’s Secure Information Exchange Network Application (SIENA) in an effective and timely manner in accordance with national and Union law. This Directive, which aims to lay down common definitions of corruption offences, should serve as a benchmark for information exchange and cooperation between the competent national authorities under Regulations (EU) No 603/2013, (EU) 2018/1240 and (EU) 2018/1862 of the European Parliament and of the Council, Directives (EU) 2016/681, (EU) 2019/1153 and (EU) 2023/977 of the European Parliament and of the Council, and Council Decision 2008/633/JHA.
