The Russian Federation’s weaponisation of gas supply and market manipulation through intentional disruptions of gas flows led to a sudden and sharp increase in energy prices in the Union, causing unprecedented price levels in 2022, up to eight times the average of previous years. The resulting need to find alternative gas supply sources, to change supply routes, to fill storages for the winter, and to find solutions for congestion problems in the Union’s gas infrastructure further contributed to high price volatility and the unprecedented price hikes in 2022.
