To achieve the targets set out in the communication of the Commission of 11 December 2019 on the European Green Deal, the development and evaluation of effective policies require enhanced statistics relating to the energy use and efficiency of housing, detailed geographical data on population distribution, and deeper studies of the relationship between population and housing. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the need for reliable, frequent and timely statistics on deaths in the Union. The Union needs an adequate mechanism for the mandatory collection of such data within the European Statistical System (ESS) carried out with the necessary frequency, timeliness and detail.
