In its conclusions of 14 and 15 December 2023, the European Council, having considered work carried out to implement the Versailles declaration of 11 March 2022 and the Strategic Compass for Security and Defence approved by the Council on 21 March 2022, underlined that more needs to be done to fulfil the Union’s objectives of increasing defence readiness. To achieve such readiness and defend the Union, a strong, resilient, innovative and competitive European defence industry is a pre-requisite.
