The automatic verification by customs authorities of the digital product passport reference for detergents and surfactants entering the Union market should not replace or modify the responsibilities of the market surveillance authorities, but should instead complement the overall framework for controls on products entering the Union market. The market surveillance authorities should, in line with Regulation (EU) 2019/1020, carry out checks of the data contained in digital products passports, checks on products within the market and, in the case of suspension of release for free circulation by the authorities designated for controls at the Union’s external borders, determine the compliance and serious risks of products pursuant to Chapter VII of Regulation (EU) 2019/1020.
