Products with a protected designation of origin or a protected geographical indication have unique characteristics, linked to their geographical origin as well as traditional know-how. In order to protect the reputation of such products and to avoid the risk of significant devaluation or improper use by third parties, it is appropriate to allow Member States to set limitations in granting new planting authorisations, to adopt measures to prevent the circumvention of rules concerning the safeguard mechanism for new plantings, and to lay down the eligibility and priority criteria for the granting of authorisations for new plantings in the areas concerned.
