The European Economic and Social Committee and the European Food Security Crisis preparedness and response Mechanism have recognised the contribution of packaging in reducing food waste and ensuring food supply and security. In that context, it is therefore appropriate for Member States to encourage and promote technological solutions that contribute to the prevention of food waste, such as active packaging intended to extend the shelf-life or to maintain or improve the condition of packaged food, especially during transportation and storage, and user-friendly tools that comply with Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council, thereby contributing to the prevention of unnecessary discarding of food which is still safe for consumption.
